TRAFFIC LIGHT SYSTEM
CITY COUNCIL PLANS REORGANISATION
EQUIPMENT .ON ORDER IN BRITAIN
Alterations and adjustments to the traffic light system in Christchurch are to be made when new equipment on order arrives from Britain. Provision for the work, which is expected to improve the position at the Bank of New Zealand comer and the Cashel street intersection, was made in the City Council’s estimates. All the lights at the Bank of New Zealand corner are to be orientated so that they will face the correct positions. At present some secondary signals are almost obscured when viewed from the centre of the stop line near the corresponding primary /signal. Where necessary, the detector pads, which actuate the lights when vehicles pass over them, will be replaced by the latest pneumatic type. All the signals are to be fitted with the correct type of lamps. The secondary signals at High street are to be reinstalled with full cowls. These signals then should not be visible from Colombo street south as they, will be focused on a point approximately central from the High street detectors. With the correct lamps fitted or renewed where the present ones are faulty, this installation should function more efficiently. At the Cashel street intersection there are no secondary signals at present, and pedestrians cross with the green light. Now secondary signals for motorists and pedestrian signals are io be installed. The primary signal will be on the near left-hand side and the secondary signal on the far right-hand side of each approach tn the intersection. Pedestrian signals will be placed on all four crossings.
