TAXI DRIVERS’ AWARD
CONCILIATION COUNCIL IN CHRISTCHURCH
A Conciliation Council will sit in Christchurch on August 12 to consider a new Dominion award for taxi drivers. This information was given last evening by Mr C. Hayward, of Christchurch, one of the employers’ assessors at the earlier sittings. There had already been two conciliation sittings in Wellington, said Mr Hayward. No agreement was reached and it was intended that the matter should go to the Arbitration Court. There was some uncertainty because both parties wished to know the Court’s ruling on the application .or a genera] wage increase before proceeding. In the meantime, he understood Dunedin taxi drivers had become restless about delays and had talked of holding a stop-work meeting. As a result, a further Conciliation Council sitting was sought, and this would take place in Christchurch on August 12. Mr Hayward said it should be known that the employers filed the application for a new award and that the delays had occurred through circumstances beyond the control of either party,
