PARKING AREA FOR TAXIS
CITY COUNCIL GRANTS REQUEST
A private parking area between Cambridge terrace and the Kiwi Kabs Association’s garage, at 70 Hereford street, was granted to the company by the Christchurch City Council at its meeting last evening. The area was granted on condition that no maintenance, including car washing, was carried out on the street. The company’s solicitor (Mr D. E. Ames) said in his application that the part of Hereford street between Cambridge terrace and Montreal street was usually well filled with cars parked there by private citizens. When the company’s taxis reported back to the garage for orders or for repairs and petrol, they were unable to park while waiting to enter the garage without infringing the rule against the parking of dars two abreast. Making the area unavailable to the private citizen would have a negligible effect on the parking situation generally, but would considerably assist the company in giving service to the public.
