POWER EMERGENCY COMMITTEE
NON-APPOINTMENT OF WOMEN
A protest against the non-appoint-ment of women to the emergency committee of the Christchurch City Council’s electricity committee was made in a letter from the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women, which was received at the council meeting last evening. The letter stated that there were six women representatives on the emergency committee in Dunedin, and the branch saw no reason why women should not be appointed to the Christchurch emergency committee. “The National Council of Women as a body feel strongly on this matter in view of the amount of electricity used in homes, which makes them vitally concerned,” added the letter. “We shall be glad if you can do something m this matter.”
The Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) said ne had explained to the National Council of Women that the committee had been appointed purely from the council. He thought the committee’s work was almost over now. Cr. M. E. Lyons: Keep it in mmd for next year, sir.
The council agreed to the Mayor’s suggestion that the National Council of Women should be informed that the committee’s work was almost over, but the suggestion would be borne in mind for the future.
