USE OF HILL TIMBERS
Sir, —I observe that Mr P. J. Higgins is again advocating the indiscriminate milling of hillside rimu. I am not greatly concerned about his arguments regarding durability of swamp timber or susceptibility of miro to borer, etc., but he makes the somewhat surprising statement that “there is not a single instance anywhere where the taking of timber trees has caused erosion,” and thereby spoils his whole case. He would do better to let his case stand on its own feet without endeavouring to bolster it with statements which a better informed person would hesitate to make.—Yours, etc., TANE MAHUTA.
