HOME MADE BOMB EXPLODES
MAKER’S HAND SHATTERED (P.A.) ■ BLENHEIM, July 28. Terence Mitchell, aged 22. of Arthur street, Blenheim, had half his left hand shattered when a bomb he was making of home-made gunpowder exploded on Saturday afternoon. Mr Mitchell made the bomb from a ’hree-inch length of electric conduit, the ends of which he plugged after filling the tube with- a mixture of sodium chloride, sugar, and charcoal. He was boring a small hole for a fuse when there was an explosion which split the pipe and flattened it. Mr Mitchell’s left hand was severed across (he palm.
First-aid was given by neighbours, and Mr Mitchell was taken to hospital, where his condition to-day was reported to be satisfactory. WOMAN INJURED IN COLLISION A passenger in one of two cars involved in a collision at the corner of Guild and Slater streets, St. Albans. Eileen Joyce Kay. was admitted to ths Christchurch Public Hospital at 9.15 a.m. yesterday with lacerations io the face and injuries to the head Miss Kay, who is 24, and lives at 137 Hills road, St. Albans, was later reported to be in a satisfactory condition. WORKER INJURED AT TANNERY Bernard Joseph Can-, aged 25, of 104 Marshall street, Woolston, caught his arm in a machine at the \Voolston Tanneries and was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital at 5.55 p.m. yesterday. He was reported last evening to be seriously ill. THREE FOOTBALLERS IN HOSPITAL Three footballers who were admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital on Saturday afternoon, were reported yesterday to be in a satisfactory condition. They were; Michael Davies, aged 25. of Rolleston House, Canterbury University. College; Lawrence Smith, ased 23, df 406 Avonside drive; and William Smith, aged, 22. of 16 Dampier street. Davies suffered concussion, L. Smith a dislocated kneecap. and W. Smith a fractured leg.
MAN’S BODY FOUND AT FOOT OF CUFF «P.A.) DUNEDIN, July 28. When a search was made for George
Marr Chisholm, a widower, aged 76, of 14 Scotia street. Port Chalmert. after he had been reported missing at fc o’clock on Saturday night, the Port Chalmers police found his battered body at the foot of a disused quarry below Scott’s Memorial on the hill flanking the township. He had apparently fallen down the cliff to his death.
PEDESTRIAN DIES FROM INJURIES
(P.A.) NEW PLYMOUTH, July 28. Injuries from which she died in the New Plymouth Hospital to-day were suffered by a pedestrian. Mrs Jean Alice Mangels, wife of a retired American officer, Charles Mangels. She was involved in an accident with a car driven by Donald Charles Price, of New Plymouth, about 12.45 a.m. yesterday. Mrs Mangels was married about four months ago. CHILD SERIOUSLY INJURED AT TAYLORVILLE Lorraine Myra Day. aged 5 years, daughter of Mr and Mrs A. Day\ of Taylorville, was admitted to the’ Grey Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from multiple abrasions and a fracture of the skull received when she was run over by a motor-car at Taylorville. Her condition is reported to be very serious.
