DELARGEY SHIELD MATCH

NORTH CANTERBURY BEATS MALVERN

North Canterbury retained the Delargey Shield when it beat the Malvern SubUnion by 12 points to 3, at Waipara on Saturday. The game was very even and , all th 6 P°i n ts were scored as the result of oppoitunist movements. Botn sets bacßs were very evenly matched, and North Canterbury owed its win to consistent backing T up and ability to take advantage of mistakes by its opponents. Some bright passing between backs and forwards was a feature of the fiist spell. Neither side made much ground in orthodox movements, C. V. Rowland (centre), the spearhead of the North Canterbury attack, being capably marked by A. Richards, whose tackling was firstclass. I. McNally (first five-eighths) showed considerable improvement on previous form. His work was hampered by some bad passes from I. Tallott (halfback). but in general his handling was good, and he kicked sparingly. R. Trollope (full-back) did not play his usual sound game. At times he stood too far back and completely missed taking some balls. He was outclassed by T. Richards, the opposing full-back. Led by M. A Henaerson, J. Loffhagen. and L. Ashworth, the North Canterbury pack was a virile combination. At times it broke away in short passing bursts, which Malvern found difficult to counter. The opposing pack, however, had more than a fair share of the ball in scrums and line-outs. J. Milliken hooked well, and D. Hutcheson and A. Roper were prominent in line-out work.

The most promising of the Malvern backs was A Richards (second fiveeighths), who straightened up the attack, defended well, and was always on hand to take an extra pass. Against a less solid defence, Richards would have shown much more brilliance, but he found it heavy going against such consistent tacklers as Rowland and Gardiner.

North Canterbury missed two easy tries near the beginning of the first spell On one occasion, Gardiner failed to pass near the line with two men outside him Then McNally dropped a pass when there was a wide gap ahead. He made amends soon afterwards by kicking a neat field goal. Rowland scored a good try in the second spell after McNally -had kicked past the full-back. Pulley converted. R. Wilson, a Malvern winger, was prominent in a long run. and Bruere scored after receiving an in-pass. Immediately afterwards. Rowland kicked deep into Malvern territory, charged down a defending kick, and scored, making the final score: North Canterbury 12 (a try, a goal from a try and a field goal), Malvern 3 (one try). Mr I. Boyce was referee. Junior Match In a junior match, Hururui beat North Canterbury by 11 points to 5. HAWKE’S BAY AND WAIRARAPA DRAW (P.A.) MASTERTON, July 27.
