FOREST POLICY
_ Sir,—The opinions that Mr F. W. Foster presented to the Empire Forestry Conference, and -Mr David Henry’s comments about them, as reported m “The Press” on July 19, should be considered. Mr Foster said extensive forestry had been a failure, and advocated intensive forestry. Mr Henry said that to date the State forest Service has done much to hinder the utilisation efforts-. Here is an instance. Valuable building timbers are exported to Australia in return for hardwoods. In Malvern, farmers s p eak about gum posts lasting for 30 or 40 years, yet some of their electric power gum poles, which were felled with the best science available and treated with preservative, decayed m four years. Intensive forestry comprises a study of localities, species and utilisations. Has the State Forest Service qualifications to direct all forest features?—Yours, etc., ALF. G. HOLLAND.
