SHIPS HEAD FOR PALESTINE

2000 JEWS ABOARD (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON, July 24. The Jerusalem correspondent of Reuters says that two Jewish illegal immigrant ships, carrying a total of 2000 passengers, are in the Mediterranean heading for Palestine. Royal Air Force areoplanes are shadowing them. A Haganah broadcast said that a Jewish illegal immigrant ship called "Return to Zion,” carrying 400 refugees, “is making for the shore witn the Navy on her track.” The correspondent adds that one of the illegal immigrant ships was last reported passing through the Straits of Messina. The other is “somewhere along the North African coast.” Both are expected to try to run the naval blockade on Monday or Tuesday.”

U.S. Naval Athletes.— All American Navy personnel would be given an opportunity to qualify for the United States team at the 1948 Olympic Games in London, said the Secretary of toe Navy (Mr James Forrestal). Outstanding athletes would be selected from the Navy for special training and coaching at the Annapolis Naval Academy, and would be tried out for competition in boxing, wrestling, swimming track events, gymnastics, fencing, pistol and rifle snooting, weightlifting, rowing, and basketball.—Washington, July 24.
