BRITISH-SOVIET TRADE TALKS

Better Prospects Of Agreement EARLY STATEMENT EXPECTED (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON. July 24. “It is learned that a statement on the British-Soviet trade talks will be issued to-morrow,” says the Moscow correspondent of Reuters. “The general atmosphere is optimistic, as Mr Harold Wilson, the leader of the British delegation, is having a further talk to-night with the Soviet Minister of Foreign Trade (Mr Mikoyan), after a long talk this afternoon." The Financial Secretary to the Treasury (Mr W. G. Hall), replying to a question in the House of Commons, to-day, said that the Soviet owed Britain more than £1,000,000,000, of which about £900,000.000 was for revolution debts and £100,000.000 for supplies and services since 1941. Nothing had been written off the total sum. Military equipment supplied during the war on mutual aid terms amounted to more than £300.000.000. The financial situation between the two countries, he added, had undoubtedly been discussed during the current trade negotiations in Moscow.
