MR SPEAKER VOTES
Unusual Action In House
PAIRS GIVEN TO GOVERNMENT (From Our ParllimenUry Reporter.)
WELLINGTON, July 24. Mr Speaker (Mr R. McKeen) returned to the chamber when the House of Representatives was in committee on the Dairy Products Marketing Commission Bill this evening, with the Chairman of Committees (Mr Clyde Carr) in the chair, and voted Jn two divisions. Although Mr W. E. Barnard when Speaker of the. House used to speak in committee, it is almost unprecedented for the speaker to vote. Mr Speaker's vote was not. really necessary because, with four pairs, the Government had 37 votes to 34. Without him it would have had 36 votes to 34. His appearance in the chamber to vote caused considerable surprise. Had the Opposition not agreed to grant pairs it could have .beaten the Government this evening since the Government had four members absent: the Minister of Defence (Mr F. Jones), the Minister of Marine (Mr J. O’Brien), Mr R. Macdonald (Ponsonby), and Mr A. S. Richards (Mount Albert).
