WINNER OF OTAKI SHIELD
VISIT TO NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 24.
The Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry) said to-day that Mr Peter B. Cruickshank, this year’s winner of the Otaki Shield, which was presented to Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen, by the relatives of the late Captain Archibald Bisset-Smith, V.C., would arrive in Wellington before the end of July on a' visit to the Dominion.
Mr Parry said that New Zealanders would always remember the heroism of Captain Smith, a former pupil of the college, who went down with his ship, the Otaki, after a gallant action with the heavily-armed German raider Moewe.
The vessel belonged to the New Zealand Shipping Company, which gives each winner of the commemorative shield a free return trip to New Zealand. Mr Cruickshank is the fourth winner of the shield to make the trip, and an extensive itinerary is being arranged for him.
