FROM SOUTHLAND

WELL-BRED FILLIES IN W. R. BUTT’S TEAM W. R. Butt’s team at Templeton has been strengthened by the arrival of two rising two-year-old fillies, which will race in the interests of Mr A. Mclntosh, Invercargill. Both are attractive types, one being by Dillon Hall from Smile Again and the other being by Bruce Walla from Night Nurse. Bruce Walla, which was a well-per-formed horse in Australia before being imported by Todd Bros., Mataura, is a son of the brilliant Globe Derby horse, Walla Walla, from Lady Berris, by Pickwick from Lady Bobbin, by Wonbobbie from Doll. Night Nurse, the dam of the Bruce Walla filly, won at the pacing gait. By Wellington Direct, she is out of a winner in the Wildwood Jun. mare. Our Nurse, which left a family of winners, including Probationer, Chevalier, and Sister Polly, to Wrack, Sure to Peter Chenault, Salalon to Adioo Guy, Come Away td Arion Axworthy, and Lord Grattan to Grattan Loyal. Smile Again, the dam of the Dillon Hall filly, was a grand performer, with a record of 2min 4sec to her credit. By the American-bred Adioo Guy, Smile Again is out of Logan Mission, which left some smart pacers, including Happi to Happy Voyage, Grand Mogul to Adioo Guy, Fervent to Quite Sure, and Larry Grattan to Grattan Loyal. Logan’s Mission, which was bred by J. Duffy, Winton, was by Logan Pointer from Wild Queen, by Wildwood, Jun., from Regina Belle, by Bellman from Regina, by Berlin. Jottings The Springfield Globe trotter in H. Walker’s team will race in .the interests of Mrs M. Becker, the owner of Darkie Grattan. The New Brighton trainer, G. Cameron, has started work on a six-year-old mare hy Lusty Volo from Reno. A winner herself, Reno is by Jack Potts from Film Star, which left other winners in Harlow and Jackie Coogan to the same sire. Film Star, which was bred by C. S. Donald, is by Pedro Pronto from Alone,' the dam of winners in Prince Pedro, Lone Derby, Blondie, and Tophand. Village Prince, ,a three-year-old son of Josedale Grattan, registered a win and two minor placings in his three starts this season and he may win his way into much better company for F. J. Smith next term. D. Todd’s team at Mataura includes the three-year-old filly, Esto Fidelis. By Dillon Hall from Miri Rei, Esto Fidelis won the Poolburn Trot from Hall Ace at the Vincent Jockey Club’s meeting at her last start. ' No nominations or withdrawals will be 'received by telephone by the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club for its National meeting next month. Worked Well Right Royal looked particularly well when working with Claremorris at New Brighton yesterday morning, and he should be near his best form for the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club’s meeting at Addington next month. Claremorris, which has npt raced since the ► Ashburton Trotting Club's meeting on June 1, 1946, has done well since being trained at New Brighton by M. B. Edwards, and he may soon return to the winning list.

By Bronze Eagle TMrs M. Brown’s two-year-old colt by Bronze Eagle from Mavis de Oro is the latest addition to J. Purdon’s team at Addington. The youngster, which closely resembles his sire, is a sensible type and he has already created a good impression on the training track. His dam, Mavis de Oro, did not race, but her breeding is of interest, as she is by Rey de Oro from a winner in Mavis Bingen, which left other winners in Cyone to Logan Pointer, Policy to Grattan Loyal, and Range Finder to Frank Worthy. Mavis Bingen, which was bred in 1918 by the late Mr E. X. Le Lievre, was by Huia Dillon (a son of Harold Dillon) from the imported Bell Bingen, which was by Bingen from Berthabell.

Likely Types Attractive youngsters which B. Grice is handling at Winslow include a filly by Nejson Derby from Minneapolis and a filly by U. Scott from Single Star. A smart pacer, Single Star, which was bred by Grice, is by Nelson Derby from Queen’s Treasure, by Rey de Oro from Queen Cole, by King Cole from Norice. Minneapolis, which was bred by Durbar Lodge, Ltd., Ashburton, is by Wrack from Estella Amos, both of which were imported from America. By Dale Axworthy from Arleigh M. H., Estella Amos is famous as the dam of Indianapolis, the winner of the 1934, 1935, and 1936 New Zealand Trotting Cups.

Important to Breeders ■' The New Zealand Trotting Conference Has decided to reopen for a short period the date for accepting applications for registration of mares of seven years of age, or over, or whose sire or dam is unregistered. Successful Operation C. Isaacson said yesterday morning that Gold Sheik, which was operated on for wind trouble in the early part of the

season, is now back to his best form, and that he expects him to take a much tighter mark in the new season. Now an aged gelding, Gold Sheik raced well as a five-year-old in the 1944-45 season to record four wins and three minor placings. A son of Sandydale, Gold Sheik is out of a winner in Mary de Oro, which is by Rey de Oro from the Logan Pointer mare, Ifighstepper. Impressive

Although she did not finish in the money in the Washdyke Trot * Handicap at the South Canterbury Hunt Club’s meeting on Saturday, Lady Beverley, which is trained at Yaldhurst by A. Holmes for Mr W. Thompson, impressed by her effort, and she appeals as an early winner. A three-year-old filly. Lady Beverley is by Gamble -ffdm Travision, which is by Travis Ax.wprthy from Hold On. May Be Converted

'Harold Jinks, which raced as a pacer when owned by Messrs A. Morris and Brosnan, is now being trained at Invercargill by S. Todd, who intends to convert him to the trotting gait. An aged gelding by Quite Sure, Harold Jinks is out of Betty Jinks, which left Sure Jinks, a winner at the trotting gait, to the same sire. Looks the Part

The Addington trainer, J. F. Foley, is spending a lot of time educating his goodlooking colt by Grattan Loyal from the Rey de Oro mare. Baby Rey. A stylish mover, the colt may race well in the classics next season.

In Good Order The two-year-old gelding, David’s Pride, which is trained by J. W. Fraser, paced smoothly when working over two miles in 4min 45sec with Goldena and Pacific Boy at New Brighton yesterday morning. David’s Pride, which finished in second place to British Machine in the Timaru Nursery Stakes at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on March 8, appears to be improving, and he should be prominent in the classics next season.
