MAGISTRATE’S COURT John Stephen Hurley, a seaman, and Herbert Hay hurst, a ship’s butcher, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate’s Court at Lyttelton yesterday, before Messrs F. E. Sutton and W. D. Gower, Justices of the Peace, with stealing two mats, valued at £1 ss, the property of Henrietta Louis Dodds. Senior-Sergeant F. Hayhurst said that it was not a case of pillaging cargo. The men were under the influence of liquor and took the mats from a shop. The accused were convicted and each fined 40s, in default seven days’ imprisonment.

Plaque Presented Captain G. W. Hearn and officers of the motor-ship Port Lyttelton were the guests of the Lyttelton Borough Council at afternoon tea in the council chambers yesterday afternoon. Those present included representatives of shipping interests in Lyttelton. The Deputy-Mayor (Cr. F. H. Heal) presided. Cr. Heal said that the citizens of Lyttelton desired to thank the Port Line for coupling Lyttelton with their new motor-ship by naming it Port Lyttelton. He presented Captain Hearn with a brass plaque, the gift of the citizens, and asked him to have it mounted in a suitable position in the vessel. . The chairman of the Harbour Board, Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon, read a letter received by air mail from the chairman of directors to the Port Line, thanking the board for its gift to the ship of a photograph of the port. He expressed the hope that the ship would serve for many years in carrying foodstuffs to Britain. The Mayoress (Mrs W. T. Lester), on behalf of the Mayor, presented Captain Hearn with a gift parcel of tinned food, a similar parcel being provided for each of the officers and crew. She said that the food was the gift of the citizens of Lyttelton. . The plaque would be placed in an honoured position on the ship, said Captain Hearn. He thanked the people of Lyttelton for their gift of foodstuffs.
