MAYOR SUGGESTS HOLIDAY
EDUCATION BOARD’S EXPLANATION
The hope that both the Canterbury Education Board and the governing authorities of the secondary schools in Christchurch would comply with the request by Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery that school children should be given a full day’s holiday was expressed by the Mayor (Mr E. H. Andrews) yesterday. He said it was clear from Field-Marshal Montgomery’s remarks that he wished the children to have a holiday quite apart from the time off they had been given to see him arrive in Christchurch. When the Mayor’s comment was referred to Mr L. E. Rowley, secretary of the Canterbury Education Board, he said that no work had been done at schools in Christchurch last Tuesday, as the request for a holiday had been anticipated. It would not be possible to grant another holiday, as suggested by the Mayor. “The Children were, assembled at school simply to facilitate. their transport into the city,” he said. “By this arrangement it was simpler to make provision for them With“ W- Christchurch Tramway Board, and-, lisey were able to occupy reserved' areas along the route, ensuring that they obtained , a good view of the distinguished visitor.**
