BOESCH WINS BOUT AT TIMARU After solid wrestling, interspersed with showmanship and “bad. man” tactics by Kay Bell, the professional heavy-weight bout at Timaru last evening, between Paul Boesch (17st) and Kay Beil (17« t 41b), reached an unexpected climax early in the seventh round, when Boesch wai awarded a penalty fall and the bout. Each man had gained one fall, Boesch securing his in the previous round. Holding Boesch in a punishing surfboard hold for more than a minute in the fourth round, and applying his boot vigorously to the middle of Boesch’s back. Bell gained the first fall with a submission. Early in the sixth round, Bell connected with a flying tackle but on attempting another, was met with a drpp-kick from Boesch, who then applied his “unconscious” hold, and had no trouble in pinning Bell. Apparently infuriated at being caught in such a manner. Bell grabbed Boesch and forced him on to the ropes with a strangle-hold. Boesch showed signs of distress. Boesch was forced to the mat alongside the ropes and Bell jumped on him repeatedly with both feet, and kicked him in the face. After several efforts, the referee (Mr J.’ Strang) separated the two and awarded Boesch a penalty fall. The police intervened to prevent further violence Immediately their backs were turned. Bell went back to Boesch and hit him on the face, knocking him to his knee, and then kicked him in the back. Boesch remained kneeling for seme time, apparently unable to rise, and was attended by a doctor. He finally got to feet and left the ring. Preliminary amateur bouts resulted: — G. Edgier (Bst 111 b) beat B. O’Leary (Bst 71b), by two falls: I. Dunsmure beat A. Shore (9st 91b), on points: B. O’Connell (inst 121 b) beat J. Farmer (list 61b), by a fall.
