LORD MONTGOMERY AT GREYMOUTH
Drive Over Southern Alps
CHEERING GROUPS ALONG THE ROAD
From Our Own Reporter GREYMOUTH, July 23. Through sunny North Canterbury and down the valleys of the West Coast, Field-Marshal Viscount Montgomery continued his triumphal tour to-day, and he was hailed frequently and warmly. Neither the people nor Lord Montgomery stood on ceremony, and every greeting was intimate yet respectful. Only official sneakers referred to him as “the Field-Marshal"; the people called him “good old Monty.” Everywhere the sunshine was brilliant and made the welcomes all the more cheerful. The day finished well with Greymouth’s typically West Coast greeting.
It was a less rushed day than any he has had in New Zealand, except last Sunday. For many miles through the picturesque hill country of North Canterbury, along the lonely highway through the foothills to the alps, and down the wooded" valleys of the West Coast, he was able to relax without being on the alert .to allow not one friendly wave to escape his attention.
