DUTCH-HELD AREA INCREASES

Islamic Party Leaves Republicans

(Rec. 1 a.m.) BATAVIA, July 23. A Republican communique broadcast by the Jogjakarta radio says that Salatiga, 40 miles south of Samarang, was attacked by air and later by seven armoured cars. After some fighting, the armoured cars withdrew. Hie attack on Salatiga indicates that the Dutch are now making a two-pronged drive on the heart of the Indonesian Republic. Netherlands forces have now occupied the whole or parts of 12 of the 22 pre-war Dutch Residencies of Java. Unconfirmed reports from Jogjakarta radio say that Dutch troops landed this morning on the south coast of East Java, about 15 miles south of Toeloengagoeng, which is about 50 miles west-south-west of Malang. At an emergency meeting of the Republic the Islamic Party, Masjumi, which is among the parties which carried the downfall of the Sjahrir Cabinet, resigned en bloc.
