SLOW REMOVAL OF GOODS

(P.A.) AUCKLAND, July 23. The slower turn-round of shipping and the failure of merchants to remove in a 44-hour week goods which accumulated in wharf sheds during a 59hour waterfront week are the two chief reasons attributed by members of the Auckland Harbour Board to the serious congestion at the port. Mr F. H. Gifford said it was possible to make a quick cure, but they would .have to "preach the gospel to the ’watersiders and make them give a reasonable and fair return for their pay.” Less cargo was being landed by each gang than was the case 15 years ago. said Mr J. B. Donald, but the 40-hour week was interfering very seriously with actual delivery of cargo, because more time was being worked on the wharves than ashore.
