MANY KILLED BY ERUPTION

NICARAGUAN VOLCANO

CITY OF 70,000 PEOPLE THREATENED

(Rec. 10.30 p.m.) MANAGUA (Nicaragua), July 21. The erupting volcano Cerro Negro, in western Nicaragua, belched toxic gas last night and this morning, killing many persons. The volcano, which is 13 miles northeast of the city of Leon, has poured hot stones ana ashes over the surrounding country for 12 days, destroying an area estimated at 280 square miles of Nicaragua’s richest farmlands and leaving thousands homeless. At one stage to-day the 1731 ft volcano spewed rocks and ashes over 2000 feet in the air.

Officials to-night are considering the complete evacuation of the 70,000 inhabitants of Leon. “Only a miracle can save Leon from destruction.” said an official.
