FRENCH LAWN TENNIS TOURNEY

PATTY HARD PRESSED BY J. A. BARRY PARIS, July 20. In the men’s singles at the French lawn tennis championships Patty beat the New Zealander, J. A. Barry, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, 5-7, 6-4. The Americans, Misses Osborne and Brough, won the women’s doubles final, beating Mrs Todd and Miss Hart, 7-5, 6-2. Reuters says that Patty, who was a semi-finalist at Wimbledon, was hard pressed to beat Barry in the second round. Patty almost made the mistake of taking his opponent too lightly. Patty played the first set nonchalantly, and lost it to Barry’s fine two-handed game. Patty’s versatility was too much for Barry in the second and third sets, but Patty again eased up in the fourth, and he had to use all his best strokes to win the fifth. In the second round of the men’s doubles, Asboth and Stopla beat the New Zealanders, R. S. McKenzie and J. E. Robson, 8-6, 1-6, 7-9, 6-4, 6-2. In the second round of the mixed doubles Robson and Miss N. Hermsen (Holland) beat Geelhand (Belgium) and Miss M. Brunnarius (France). 6-4, 6-1.
