The informality with which Field - Marshal Montgomery conducted a meeting to award the school children of South Canterbury a holiday—“not a miserable naif holiday’’—delighted the citizens of Timaru at the civic reception this evening. Declaring himself in the chair, Viscount Montgomery briefly stated his proposal. “Are we legally constituted?” he asked. “Well, the proposal is that every school in South Canterbury is to have a holiday, not a miserable half-holiday, a proper holiday. That is the motion.” He declared the motion carried unanimously.
