BIG PURCHASE OF TINNED FISH
DISTRIBUTION IN NEW ZEALAND (P.A.) WELLINGTON, July 3. Many cartons of salmon, sardines, pilchards, and mixed tinned fish were unloaded from the Union Company’s chartered vessel Hartlepool to-day as part of the cargo of about 6000 cartons. They are the quota for the Wellington Province of a large Government purchase of tinned fish from the British Admiralty. Some of the cartons were stamped 1943 when packed in the United States. The Hartlepool’s cargo for Wellington is part of a Dominion-wide distribution scheme. The South Island’s allotment is still to come from Australia. The total purchase, said to be a large one, was made by the Government from Admiralty surplus stores in Sydney.
