STEWART’S GULLY
Sir,—Your correspondent, “Sheer Wood," undoubtedly was right in suggesting that the residents of Stewart’s Gully emulate the activities of Robin Hood and his Merry Men. May I point out that the success of Robin Hood methods depends on the unity and co-operation of all members of the band. ’The bach owners of Stewart’s Gully are sadly lacking in those most essential qualities. Had they remained united two years ago they would not be in the unhappy plight in which they find themselves to-day.—Yours, etc., THE GOOSE HANGS HIGH. July 3. 1947.
Sir.—l heartily endorse the remarks of “Fair Play” and “Interested Tenant” in “The .Press.” I had been interested in leasing a section at Stewart’s Gully, but had been told nothing of conditions until I made some discreet inquiries, when I learned that they were, if anything, worse than has been stated by your correspondents. Some tenants who lent their baches to homeless friends have had their leases cancelled because they will not pay the illegal sub-letting charge that the landlords demand. Stewart’s Gully must surely be unique in a civilised world. Governed by its own rules and laws, it is a miniature kingdom that has not progressed with the rest of New Zealand, but has gone back to the old feudal days. As I consider myself of the progressive type, then I, too, shall look elsewhere for a place to live.—Yours, etc., NEARLY CAUGHT. July 3, 1947.
