FLOOD LOSSES IN WAIRARAPA
ESTIMATE OF 9000 SHEEP AND 300 CATTLE (PA.) WELLINGTON, July 3. While the full position would not be disclosed until the flood waters had receded from all farms, a preliminary estimate of stock losses in the Wairarapa was 9000 sheep and 300 head of cattle, said the Assistant DirectorGeneral of Agriculture (Mr R. B. Tennent) to-night. Mr Tennent visited the district to-day to assist in setting up a committee to help settlers. From a national point of view the losses were not as serious as had been expected, raid Mr Tennent, but in saying that he did not want to minimise the grievous losses suffered by individual farmers. Settlers in the flooded areas were showing an exceptionally fine spirit and were getting down to the job of repairing the damage. Restoration of fences would be one of the chief problems. particularly because of the acute shortage of materials.
