J FORCE DRAFT INSPECTED
MAJOR-GENERAL WEIR TAKES SALUTE
<p.A.) ’ AUCKLAND, July 3. “Only about six weeks ago I saw J Force in Japan, and its reputation stands exceedingly high,” said the Chief of the General Staff (MajorGeneral N. W. McD. Weir) when he addressed members of the second J Force relief draft at Papakura military camp. General MacArthur had told him that the New Zealand troops in Japan had lived up to the difficult task of an occupation force in peace with the same high reputation that they had gained as soldiers in war. Major-General Weir congratulated the troops on their steadiness on Sarade. That was clear evidence that ley had not wasted their time in the force. They had a high standard to live up to. “From what I have seen to-day I am quite sure you will worthily uphold the standard in Japan,” said MajorGeneral Weir. “It is 'a very proud thing to be able to say in Japan to-day that you are a New Zealand soldier. I wish you the best of luck and I am sure you will enjoy your service abroad.”
After ceremonial drill, Major-Gen-eral Weir inspected the 1900 members of the draft, including a party of 40 Waacs and 30 V.A.D.’s. Latex, in drizzling rain, he took the salute at a march past. The draft is expected to leave for Japan in the transport Dunera which is due from Wellington towards the middle of next week.
