DISPLAY OF MURAL PAINTINGS
WINNING ENTRIES BY N.Z. ARTISTS Prize-winning entries in a recent competition held to encourage the painting of murals by New Zealand artists are now on view at Ballantynes. The contest, which was judged recently, drew a good number of'entries, many of which came from very young artists. The winner of the first prize in the open section, Miss Rona Dyer, of Dunedin, exhibited a mural in three sections. depicting healthy living, research, and knowledge of health, which was a suggested design for the waiting room of the new St. Helens Hospital.
The judges (Mr Sydney Thompson, Misses Ngaio Marsh and Cora Wilding) said that the entry had outstanding mural qualities, as it was simple, did not destroy the symmetry of the wall, and was low in tone. Second equal were Mrs N. McKenzie and Mr D. Knight Turner. In the Maori section the first prize was won by Toa Rangitahi. Many of the entries came from school pupils. A display of photographs of murals done at Auckland and Wellington by Mr J. Tutkington are included in the exhibition. Samples of abstract art by Mr M. Mrkusil are also shown.
