ILL-TREATMENT OF CHILD
PARENTS ADMITTED TO PROBATION (P.A.t MASTERTON. May 3. "Like an exhibit from Belsen," was a medical witness’s description of a baby boy, aged one year 10 months, when his parents, Tuhl Namana and Te Rang! Katuakina Namana, of Gladstone, were each convicted by the Magistrate on a charge of having ill-treated the child. The child was found alone in the house, with little clothing, and in a filthy condition. The father was found in a hotel and the mother Shopping at a store. The child was taken to hospital. Dr. Forsyth said the child was to an extreme state of neglect and filth. It had scabies, septic sores, a septic wound, a broken finger, bodily abrasions and cuts, and was apathetic, like a Belsen camp The Magistrate said that both deserved to go to gaol, but as Namana was suffering from a hip disease and receiving treatment, and his wife was going into a maternity home, he would admit them both to probation for three and two years respectively. Namana. was ordered to take out a prohibition order.
