HELIOPOLIS AND ACROPOLIS

GOOD PROSPECTS AT AUCKLAND

Heliopolis and Acropolis, which are both out of the Man o’ War mare. Seaworthy, are engaged in the main events at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-mor-row, and, on recent form, they should earn some of the prize-money. Heliopolis, which is by Sandydale, has raced well this season for 10 placings in 16 starts and she should be seen at her best in the Freyberg Handicap, where she win start from the 12 yards mark. Driven by V. Mackie, who trains her at Remuera for Mr L. Mackie, Heliopolis started the season with a third placing to Desert Lad and Gamble King in the September Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on September 21. Improved by that race, she followed up with a splendid effort at the same club’s meeting on October 26 to win the first prize of £ll4O in the Victory Handicap. After paying her way with six . minor placings in her next 12 starts, Heliopolis returned to the winning list at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting on March 8, when, after conceding starts of up to 48 yards in the Fergusson Handicap, she hung on well to win by a length and a half from Doctor Ted in 4min 21sec. Later in the afternoon she confirmed this form by taking the lead in the early stages of the Papatoetoe Handicap, and carrying on to win by a length and a half from Sprayman, with Catalpa in third place. A Dillon Hall gelding, Acropolis, which recently joined J. B. Pringle’s team, showed good form when trained earlier in the season by C. M. Laing for Mrs N. Adams. His record this season includes a second placing, four third placings, and a fourth placing. The second placing was recorded at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on January 25, when he finished fast to get within a length of Dundee Sandy in the Au Revoir Handicap in the smart time of 2min 54 2-ssec for a mile and three furlongs. Acropolis is approaching his best form again, and he should pay expenses on the trip. Bred by Mr A. Rattray, Balclutha, Seaworthv. the dam of these horses, is out of May Tracey, by Captain Tracey from Harold’s Pride, by King Harold from Lady Hope, by Del Paso from the Berlin mare, Countess. Heliopolis and Acropolis are high-class pacers and they appeal as attractive pro.positions on their present marks. Jottings Fontaine lost her chance when she broke in the early part of the Winslow Trot at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting on Saturday. A speedy three-year-old Casanova filly, Fontaine is capable of surprising if she is on her best behaviour in the Lauriston Trot at the same club’s meeting to-morrow. Castigate, which finished in fourth place in the Railway Handicap at the Forbury Park meeting on Saturday, was later disqualified for the race by the stipendiary stewards for breaking. Snowflake is one of the favourites for the Cornwall Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting. Dillondale is now racing solidly and a winning turn may come for him at the Canterbury Park meeting next week.

nterbury Park meeting next week. If Mine Host leaves the mark correctly, he should go close to winning the Stewards’ Handicap at Auckland to-morrow. Trained at Wyndham Dragoman, which is owned and trained by H. I. Herbert, Wyndham, is an interesting acceptor in the Enfield Handicap at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting “tomorrow. A four-year-old gelding by Dillon Hall from Pleasure Cruise, Dragoman won the Ohai Trot Handicap at the Riverton Racing Club’s meeting on April 8. At the Southland Racing Club’s meeting at Invercargill on April 19, he finished in third place to Maida Dillon and Loyal Boy in the Otatara Harness Trot. On the second day of the same club’s meeting, which was held on 'April 26, Dragoman gave nothing a change after taking charge with fwo furlongs to go in the Orepuki Harness Trot, and he won comfortably from Loyal Boy in 4min 38sec on a greasy track. Dragoman’s form is impressive and he should pay expenses on the trip. Consistent ' Glen Devon gave his usual solid performance to finish in fourth place to Commander Scott, Wayfarer, and Grattan Gold in the Winslow Trot Handicap at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s

meeting on'Saturday, and he may secure an overdue win iiL the’ Lauriston Trot Handicap at the same club's meeting tomorrow. An aged Logan Fraser gelding, Glen Devon has raced consistently this season for seven minor placings in 12 starts. Won at Last Start Driven by F. E. Upton, Highland Dale won the Awatere Trotting Handicap and the Hillersden Trotting Handicap in fine style at the Marlborough Racing Club’s meeting last month, and a repetition of that form should find him hard to beat in the Papakaio Handicap at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting. Matinee Meeting at Methven The Methven Trotting Club has received permission to hold a matinee meeting on May 21. The programme will include a £125 race for maiden trotters and a £l5O race for maiden pacers. Won Well After following Surely, Coral Princess, Lady Gamble, Scottish Star, and Sandpiper with five furlongs to go in the Peninsula Handicap at Forbury Park on Saturday, Mountain Hall sustained a fastrun over the last four furlongs and he ran home an easy winner from Coral Princess. A consistent son of Dillon Hall, Mountain Hall may add to his good re> cord at the Canterbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting next week. A Solid Pacer The six-year-old Jewel Pointer gelding, Kilcash, has developed into a solid performer under R. Dunn’s care, and he has raced well this season for two wins, six second placings, two third placings, and a fourth placing. Kilcash is nicely placed on the scratch mark in the Mangere Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow, and he appears as the most likely to fight out the finish with Commotion, which won at Hutt Park last week. Has Some Form At her last two starts, Abbeydorney has shown some ability to finish in second place to Sir Hall in the Trial Handicap at the Wyndham Trotting Club’s meeting on March 15, and in second place to Top Thorn in the Otautau Handicap at the Birchwood Hunt Club’s meeting on March 29. Owned by Mr A. Moynihan and trained by A. Crawford, Abbeydorney is a four-year-old mare by Sandydale from a Nelson Bingen mare. Her recent form indicates that she is settling down to race solidly, and she may show up in the Trial Handicap at the Oamaru Trotting Club’s meeting to-morrow. Likely Improver Incredible gave a fair display to finish in fourth place to Razzle,-, Courtly and Gunsmoke in the Southland Handicap at the Forbury Park Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday, and he would need to show little improvement on that effort to win the Melrose Trot Handicap at the Ashburton County Racing Club’s meeting to-morrow. Driven by his owner, D. A. Morland, for whom he is trained at Addington by G S. Smith, • Incredible showed his best form for the season at the Oamaru Jockey Club’s meeting on March 24 when he finished fast to beat Colin Waters by a head in the second division of the Landon Handicap. Bred by Mr R. L. Ashcroft, New Brighton, Incredible is a three-year-old gelding by Logan Fraser from Tuscan, which is by Sonoma Harvester from a Harold Dillon maijp. Canterbury Park T.C.
