£1,000,000 LOST IN WAGES AND REVENUE
(Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 9 pun.) . SYDNEY, May 8. A statement by the Victorian Government on the Amalgamated Engineering Union strike says that in wages missed by the men and in revenue lost to public utilities the dispute cost Victoria at least £1,000,090. The men involved in the dispute lost £600,000 in wag.*, the railways £275,000 in revenue, and the tramways and buses £130,000. During the dispute Commonwealth unemployment benefits in the State totalled £lOO,OOO. Business turnover diminished by 30 per cent, and the production ot essentials, such as baths, stoves, grates, window-frames, sinks, and tyres, practically eeased. Everywhere building* are uncompleted, contracts are unfinished, and industries are running to a standstill because of the absence of material*.
