£67,000 CLAIMED
CROWN SUES COAL COMPANY
DELIVERIES SAID TO BE FRAUDULENT (Rec. 11 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 7. Alleging that for more than 20 years Rylance Collieries and Brickworks, Ltd., regularly -over-claimed for cbaj, the Crown is claiming £67,937 4s 7d from the company in the Supreme Court. The Crown alleges that the money was paid for coal which the company fraudulently claimed to have delivered to the dry dock at south Brisbane and to various Government ships and drudges. The company denies the charges. Addressing the jury, Mr Arnold Beilnett. K.C., for the Crown, said: “Emboldened by its ittifilUtiity over the years, the defendant company eventually weht otit of its Way to increase the degree in Which it Was defrauding the Government, in September, 1943, instructions wefe given to plainclothes detectives. As a result, a close and secret check whs kept on the coaling of Government vessels. This check disclosed tome startling things.”
