EXPEDITION TO ANTARCTIC

CANBkRRA, May 7. Grotto Captain Stuart Campbell of the R.A.A.F. has been offered the post of chief executive officer, and therefore, probably the leadership of the Australian expedition to the Antarctic next Summer. He took, part in the British, Australian, and New Zealand expedition to the Antarctic led by Sir Douglas Mawspn in 1929-31. It is understood that the command of the Wyatt Earp, which will carry ge expedition to Antarctica, will be ven to Commander K. E. Ooiit, of e Royal Australian Navy. Decisions on the leadership of the scientific party and a representative pt the Royal Australian Air Force have yet to be made. . . The Department of External Affairs has taken over the chief responsibility for the expedition. . Other questions to be decid*i will be the extefit of the expedition, what ■landing parties will be put ashore, and what bases will be established. Purchases of gear from America, Norway, and other parts of the world will be made. The skis and boots will come from Norway, and the United States or Canada will supply helvy clothing and equipment. ,It is hoped that all preparations Will be complete by the end Of October. Group Captain Stuart Alexander Caird Campbell, who is 44, is a graduate in engineering of Sydney University. and he has carried otit an extensive survey of Australia and New Guinea. Recehtly he has been associated with the Civil Aviation Department on special work. Commander Oom is one of the Royal Australian Navy’s hydrographic surveyors.
