NEW PORT LINE SHIPS

BUILDING PROGRAMME OUTLINED (PA.) AUCKLAND, May 6. One of two large cargo ships being built for the Port Line in Britain will be named the Port Auckland, stated Mr R. H. Senior, director of the Port Line, in an interview. Mr Senior is completing a month’s tour of the ports in both the North and South Islands. Port Auckland was the name of a Port Line steamer lost during the war. “The Port Line is continuing a progressive building programme which, when completed, will bring the fleet up to and in advance of its former high standard of refrigerated ships,” said Mr Senior. “The carrying capacity will be brought to the same level as before the war. All this new tonnage is costing more than 100 per cent more than before the war, and it must be obvious that a quick turnround on the New Zealand coast is absolutely essential if overseas companies are to give the Dominion service which it wants and deserves.”
