SOUTH ISLAND AWARDS From Our Own Reporter TIM AR U. May 6 Alihouga entries were poor in the National Chi ysanthemum Society’s South island show, which was opened at Timaru to-day by the Mayor (Mr A. E. S. Hanan;, blooms exhibited in the single blooms section surpassed the best of those shown at the society’s show in Palmerston North recently. Exhibits in this section by D. B. Shand, of Timaru, were outstanding and his blooms took all but one «fte championship awards. C. W. Preen, of Dunedin, dominated in the large flowering section, but the blooms exhibited were not up to those shown in the Single blooms section. Entries in a show held by the Timaru Horticultural Society in conjunction with the National Chrysanthemum Society, .were also not as large as usual because of the strong north-west wind experienced throughout South Canterbury during -he week-end However, the majority of the blooms exhibited were excellent. In the singles section of the national «iow, the champion of champions was D *»• Shand’s yellow bloom, Phyllis Cooper. •Mr Shand also exhibited the following champion blooms: red. Red Boy; white Mrs M. J Irvine: yellow. Phyllis Cooper; Phik. Peeress; bronze, Margaret Milligan. The champion in any other colour, Red "jjsign, was shown bv V M Dickinson (Dunedin) C W Preen's yellow flower, Mrs E. Aiwas the champion bloom exhibited the large flowering section. In addition to winning the South Island open championship for 12 varieties, and the ■ BP I . Islana amateur championship, this exhibitor showed the following champion blooms:—white. William Turner; yellow. Mrs E Alston; pink, Kathleen McCrabb; bronze. Clara Truman: anv other colour. E W Hayes ine judge of the single blooms was Mr a. G. Rigby (Dunedin), and the judge of large flowers was Mr M J Barnett (Christchurch) Other awards were:— Single Blooms.—South Island championBhip (12 varieties): D B.
