AID TO GREECE AND TURKEY
STASSEN’S COMMENT ON PLAN
(Rec. 10 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 5. Mr Harold Stassen, the only avowed seeker of the Republican nomination, for the United States Presidency in 1948, said that although he favoured President Truman’s aid programme for Turkey and Greece, it would be a tragic mistake for America to arm an all-out offensive against the Greek guerrillas, thus causing a full-scale civil war.
He described the Truman doctrine as negative. He said it merely meant being against something whereas the United States should have a positive and constructive approach to world problems.
