MORE TEMPORARY BUILDINGS

CANTERBURY COLLEGE ADDITIONS

ERECTION OF LARGE ARMY HUTS

The appearance of Canterbury University College has been materially altered in the last few months by the addition of a large amount of new floor space in temporary buildings. Chief among these is the new geography block facing Worcester street, tiie permit for which was the subject of a short dispute. This gives additional accommodation for 300 students. The latest additions are on the Here-

ford street frontage on the large vacant lot between the Students’ Unjcn building and the science departments. They are provided by large Army huts, the erection of which is almost completed, although interior work has still to be done. At present they are still painted the familiar olive green of Army camouflage.

One of the larger units will serve as a workshop to be shared by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research workers attached to the college and the National Schoo) of Engineering. Another building will be used as a drawing room for engineering students. Nearer the science departments will ne accommodation for a biology laboratory.

Some people have already expressed concern at the addition of further temporary buildings, which thev consider unsightly, to the college. The chairman of the college council 'Mr W. C. Colee) said yesterday that the council deeoly regretted its inability to arrange additions more in keeping with the appearance of the University: but it was obliged to accept any accommodation which would relieve the serious shortage. Even with the considerable recent additions, quarters were cramped.

All the university colleges in New Zealand had been compelled to accept temporary buildings, said Mr Colee. In Auckland and Wellington the colleges had 10 or 12 each and the southern colleges were now receiving some relief as the former Army buildings became available.
