ILLICIT TRADING BY TROOPS
COST TO BRITISH TREASURY (Special Correspondent N-Z.PJLJ
(Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, April 1«. Illicit trading and black market currency dealings by British forces on the Continent cost the British Treasury nearly £38,500,000 last year, according to the Army Appropriations Account.
The Comptroller and Auditor-Gene-ral, Sir Frank Tribe, recommended the writing off of £13.000,000 in the Netherlands, £24,000,000 in Germany, and £1,250,000 in Austria.
Seven hundred and five cases of theft of service vehicles caused a loss of £250.000, and 161 cases of theft of stores cost £162.444. Tapping of an Army petrol pipeline on one station abroad caused a loss estimated at £58,000.
