OBITUARY

MISS E. A. AITKEN , The death occurred on Monday of. Miss E. A. Aitken, St. Elmo Courts, who was a well-known member of many organisations in the city. At the time of her death she was | vice-president of the Christchurch branch of the Over Seas League. End had been for many years a very enthusiastic and hard-working member of the branch; and at one time she was honorary corresponding secretary. For many years she was chairwoman of the local branch, until failing health compelled her to take a less active ( part in the work. Before the war broke out she was awarded by the headquarters of the league in London a badge, “honoris causa,” which is given for conspicuous service to the league, and is a very rare distinction. Miss Aitken was instrumental in the formation of Crockford’s Chib, and also of the Queen’s Club, to which she gave great service in its earlier days. She was for years a member of the executive of Crockford’s Club. Miss Aitken was also one of the very earliest members of the Canterbury Repertory Theatre Society. During the war she did a great deal of work in distributing wool and packing garments at the Patriotic Council s wool room.

Miss Aitken trained as a nurse in England, and worked there in that capacity during the war of 1914-18. She was a daughter of -Mr J. H. R. Aitken, who came to New Zealand from St. Andrews, Scotland.
