VICEREGAL

(P.A.) WHANGAREI, April 15. The Governor-General and Lady Freyberg had an enthusiastic reception to-day when they paid their first visit to Whangarei. There was a large attendance in the Town Hall when an official welcome was extended by the Mayor, the chairman of the county council, and the Rev. Mr Harawira on behalf of Maoris in Northland.

During the day their Excellencies visited the hospital, the children’s health camp, schools and a gathering of returned servicemen, where Sir Bernard Freyberg mingled with the men, recalling moments when he and individual men had undergone mutual experiences.

In the evening Sir Bernard Freyberg held an investiture in the presence of a large audience.

Mr S. G. Holland, Leader of the Opposition, is visiting the West Coast and Buller districts. He is accompanied by Mrs Holland and by his brother, Mr H. E. Holland, who recently arrived from Australia on a holiday visit. Their itinerary includes a visit to the South Westland Glaciers, and they will be in Greymouth on Friday on their way back to the east coast.

Mr W. Shaw, who has been supervisor at the Waimate Post and Telegraph Office for more than six years, has received notice of his appointment as postmaster at Methven.

Messrs F. E. S. Long and A. Collins were appointed to represent the Christchurch Y.M.C.A. at a convention of the national council of the New Zealand Y.M.C.A., to be held at Auckland from April 21 to April 24, by a meeting of the board of directors last evening.
