SHORTAGE OF REFEREES DISCUSSED Describing the lack of referees as .“extremely serious," Mr T. Gottermeyer. representative of the Referees’ Association on the management committee of the, Canterbury Football Association, said at a meeting of the committee last evening that steps would have to be taken immediately to rectify a most unfortunate position. Only 13 referees were available to control about 25 matches, he said, and after the referees had been allotted to senior game and other grades in descending order, many matches were without referees. Of the 13 referees, two were not available on race days. It was decided to make an immediate appeal to former players and others interested to volunteer to act as referees The chairman (Mr J. E. Jones) reported that the City Council had granted permission for a working bee to make repairs to the grandstand, seating accommodation, and dressing rooms, at. English Park. Much had been done already, he said, and the working party would ultimately effect considerable improvements on the ground. The late starting of some matches was discussed, and it was decided to instruct clubs that teams should be ready to take the field five minutes before the time fixed, particularly in early games, and to ask them to provide line umpires for their games.

It was decided to appoint a selector for representative teams from the junior and third grades.
