OUTPUT OF COTTON' PIECE GOODS World output of cotton piece goods is now below pre-war by about 15 per cent., according to a survey issued by the council of the Cotton and Rayon Merchants Association Exports, it states, have fallen to a far greater extent, showing a large portion of the world’s production being used to satisfy local needs. The population in large areas of the world is inadequately clothed, and the council claims that shortly export trade will need to be free of all restrictions on changing direction as circumstances require The warning is given that progress m production on the Continent and in Japan may be more rapid than in countries which are nearer their maximum effort Latest reports from Japan indicate output at an annual rate of more than 400,000.000 square yards, compared with an average of 4.000.000.000 in pre-war years. Output on the Continent is said to oe at the rate of 4.000,000,000 square yi.rds yearly, against an average of 7,520,000,000 for 1937 and 1938. 1
