BYRD DISCUSSES EXPLOITATION
“AWFUL LOT OF COAL THERE ” (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.10 p.m.) NEW YORK, April 14. “Within 25 years we could go after the resources in Antarctica,” said RearAdmiral R. E. Byrd in an interview. “There is an awful lot of coal there, and nobody knows what other resources may lie hidden under the ice.” Admiral Byrd also suggested exploiting the vast icecap as a natural refrigerator for the storage ox surplus crops in bumper years. He added that he had not yet decided whether to recommend official United States action toward establishing part of the Antarctic as American territory. The Mount Olympus, flagship of Rear-Admiral Byrd’s expedition, arrived yesterday at the naval dock in the Potomac river. Admiral Byrd, looking ruddy and fit after his fourth Antarctic expedition, was met by the Secretary of the Navy (Mr James Forrestal), Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, Com-mander-in-Chief of the United States Navy. and Vice-Admiral Forrest Sherman, Deputy-Chief of Naval Operations.
