MANY MARRIAGES BY REGISTRAR
More than 20 per cent, of Christchurch marriages last month were performed by the registrar. There were 200 marriages in March, and the registrar performed 42 of them.. For the three months a total of 599 marriage licences were granted, the registrar performing 97 of them. In 1946 the registrar performed 33 of 208 marriages in March, and 99 of 611 in the first three months.
Births registered for the first three month of this year totalled 1143, which is an increase of 130 over the total for January, February, and March in 1947. The March total for this year showed a drop, however, 335 births being registered, compared with 402 in March last year. Deaths for the quarter totalled 406, against 394 for 1946, and for March they were 124, which was 10 fewer than the total for March the previous year.
