BIG FIRE AT HAIFA
Flames Engulf Six Oil Tanks PIPELINE BROKEN BY EXPLOSION (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 2 a.m.) JERUSALEM, March 31. The biggest fire ever seen in Haifa is raging following explosions in the oil installations area. All Army and civilian fire brigades were summoned to fight the fire, which has engulfed six oil tanks containing many hundreds of thousands of gallons of oiL The damage is reported to be considerable, but there have been no casualties. A curfew was imposed in the Jewish quarter of Haifa this morning. Blazing oil from a pipe-line smashed by the explosion is reported to have blown up the oil tanks. The fire ranged along the Shell Company’s feeder lines from the refinery which handles all the Iraq Petroleum Company’s output. Wind is fanning the fire, which is threatening the main tank area half a mile away.
