FAMINE COMMITTEE’S RESOLUTION

The following resolution of the Christchurch Famine Emergency Committee was sent by telegram yesterday to the Prime Minister (Mr P. Fraser), the Leader of the Opposition (Mr S. G. Holland), the secretary of the New Zealand Freezing Workers’ Union, and the secretary of the South Island Freezing Companies’ Association: — “This committee deplores the interruption of vital meat supplies to Britain by the present strike in the freezing industry. The effect of the strike tends to frustrate greatly the work of the committee in its efforts to stimulate production of foodstuffs and in its general appeal to the public. Following so closely on the disastrous snowstorms and floods, which have made Britain’s already-acute food situation even more precarious, the cessation of work in the freezing industry must impose additional hardships on the people of Britain, already sorely- tried. The committee hopes that pvery effort will be made by all concerned to bring about an early settlement of the strike.” In discussion, members said that in addition to interrupting the production of meat, the strike was causing lambs to be held on feed which was required for store sheep and on land which might be sown in wheat. The chairman (Mr J. L. Hay) emphasised that thsfccommittee could not become involved*!!! the politics of the strike; but it must be concerned at the effect on food supplies overseas. He hoped flhe contributions of the public in other directions would help to compensate in meeting the needs of those overseas.
