Miss R. P. Karsten, who has been principal of the Avonside Girls’ High School since 1941, will retire as from September 1 this year. This advice was received by the Canterbury University College Council yesterday. The chairman (Mr W. C. Colee) said that under Miss Karsten the school had become one of the finest for girls in the Dominion. There would be opportunities later to recognise Miss Karsten’s work.

Miss M. Thompson (Cashmere Hills), who is in charge’ of the office at the Cashmere Sanatorium, will retire from that position within the next few weeks. Miss Thompson, who has had 33 years’ service at the Sanatorium, is known to hundreds of former patients and their relatives.

Mrs J. G. Collins and Mrs O. H. Frankel will be joint hostesses at buttet tea at the Society of Arts exhibition at the Durham street gallery to-day. The sales of pictures during the exhibition, which will close tomorrow night, is nearly equal to the sales of 1925, which were a record for the society, and have exceeded last year’s sales which were the next highest since the founding of the society.

The president (Mrs L. Wilson) presided at the annual meeting of the Christchurch Central . Townswomen's Guild. The following officers were elected: —president, Mrs L. Wilson; honorary secretary, Mrs J. Tate; committee, Mesdames A. Taylor, E. Marsh, E. Hutchings. Fineran, Agrjew, Spedding, E. M. Hammott, C. E. Anderson, M. Brewer, E. Duff, O. Philpott, W. Hammond, F. Horne, and F. S. Palmer. Floral sprays were presented Ao Mesdames L. Wilson, J. Tate, and Tl. Hills in appreciation of work done through the year. Mrs E. Heap, a member from the Newbold Townswomen’s Guild in England was- welcomed, and was presented with a shoulder spray. Flowers were also given to Mrs 8. Penlington, who is leaving ChristchurcrfHo live in Dunedin.

At the annual meeting of the Avonside Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association held recently, the following officers were elected: —patroness, Miss K. M. Gresson; president, Miss A. J. McKee; vice-presidents, Misses E. Baxter, Betty Hart, Jean Barnes, and Olive Brosnan; secretary, Miss Jean Strachan; treasurer, Miss Alison Webb; committee. Misses Joan Simon, Alison Hughes, Janice Steel, and Mrs Peggy Bateman, also Misses Joan Pierce (Hockey Club), Lorna Wilson (Cricket Club), and Phyllis Yates (Tramping Club).

Miss C. Henderson presided at the monthly meeting of the Christchurch branch of the Women’s Christian Temperance Union. It was decided to send gifts of used clothing to the Maori girls’ hostel in Auckland. A report on the Dominion convention of the union, held recently in Auckland, was given by Miss M. B. Lovell-Smith. Miss Henderson spoke of the international meeting of the Alliance of Women which was held this year in Switzerland.

Mrs Parlane presided at the annual meeting of the Halswell sub-centre of the Red Cross Society. The president’s report of the year’s work stated that £l5 had been paid as assessment, £22 10s had been paid for food for Britain, £2 to Junior Red Cross, £5 to International Red Cross, £5 to Red Cross headquarters in Wellington, £1 for soldiers’ parcels, and £3 for cakes for soldiers in hospital. The depot in the Square had been manned by members. Burwood Hospital patients had been visited and flowers supplied. Sewing and knitted garments had been sent to the head office. A successful flower show had also been held. The appointment of officers for the following year resulted as follows:—president, Mrs Brake (reappointed) ; vice-presidents, Mrs Parlane and Mrs Talbot; secretary, Miss Carter. Mr and. Mrs John Farrell ’(Auckland), who are visiting Christchurch, will leave for Wellington on Friday. The lady editor of “The Press” gratefully acknowledges receipt of magazines for patients in the Sanatorium from Mrs J. Gill and from anonymous friends.
