DEATH PENALTY IN PUNJAB
CHECK ON COMMUNAL VIOLENCE NEW DELHI, March 19. An act providing the death penalty for attempted murder, abduction, rape, banditry, and arson, is announced by the Governor of the Punjab (Sir Evan Jenkins). The Punjab Disturbed Areas Act specifies the northern and western Punjab and several large towns, including Amritsar. and Jullundur. It magistrates and police officers to open fire or use other means, even, causing death, against anyone disobeying the ban on the assembly of more than five persons and the carrying of weapons. A Government communique issued in Lahore to-day states that casualties in the rural areas of the Punjab Province during communal disorders have been very large. Raiders from across the frontier helped the local inhabitants in their misdeeds.
