Press Association—Copyright) U.S. Control of Exports.— President Truman sent a message to the Congress asking that the wartime control of exports be extended for a year beyond the statutory expiry date of June 30. The message pointed out that because of the critical shortage of supplies at home and abroad control was necessary to> protect the United States economy as well as to discharge international responsibilities.—Washington, March 19. Indian Bank Closes.— The Associated Banking Corporation of India closed its doors after a run on its funds for a month. It is a Bombay bank with a predominantly Moslem board of directors, and has 12 branches in different parts of India. It was established in 1942 and had deposits exceeding £2,500,000 according to the latest balance-sheet.—Bombay, March 19. Fewer Ocean-going Ships.—The United States Maritime Commission reported to-day that the number of ocean-going passenger ships under the American flag have been reduced to 91, with a total passenger capacity of 27,017. Of these only 21, with an aggregate capacity of 4359 passengers, were in active operation.—Washington, March 19. French Detective Found Dead. —The French police found in a room of the Hotel Rex the body of a senior Surete detective who was wanted for questioning* about the Joanovici case, says the correspondent in Paris of the “Evening Standard.” He was commissionaire Marius Bouille and he had shot himself through the head. It is known that much of yesterday’s Cabinet meeting was devoted to the Joanoyici case although officially nothing has been said.—Paris, March 19.
