ROAD TO MILFORD ’ SOUND
MR PARRY’S PROPOSAL OPENING fBr NINE MONTHS OF YEAR A proposal to keep the road through the Homer tunnel to Milford Sound open for about nine months of the year will be discussed by the Minister of Internal Affairs (Mr W. E. Parry), who has just visited Milford Sound, with the Minister of Works (Mr R. Semple). Mr said in Christchurch last evening that he had been told when he was over the road that it would not be advisable to keep it open for more than nine months of the year. If this plan were adopted, the road would be closed during the time when there was danger from avalanches. The road was rough and dangerous when Mr Parry passed over it a week ago. He said that, in spite of its con'dition- and although it was officially closed to traffic, a number of motor vehicles were going through to Milford Sound. That proved that there would be a good deal of traffic if the road were made safe.
Mr Parry said the surface of the road was very rough. Some bridges damaged by storms last year had not been repaired and others required strengthening.
