WOODEN HOUSE DAMAGED A wooden two-storey house at 23 Manning street, Riccarton, was slightly damaged by fire yesterday afternoon, Workmen had been burning off paint on the weather boards. The Christchurch Fire Brigade was called at £.4 p.m., and easily put the fire out. The house was unoccupied. GRASS FIRE AT SUMNER The Christchurch Fire Brigade attended a call to a grass fire in an empty section alongside the Cave Rock Hotel Sumner, at 12.45 p.m. yesterday. The section was being burned off when the fire got out of control. Fire in Tararua Ranges.— Fire broke out in the Wellington Water Board’s area in the Tararua ranges during the week-end. Only unnqllable timber near the upper limit of the forest was affected, and though the fire appeared dangerous on Saturday, it was soon got under control by trampers and the Water Board staff. It is now extinguished.—P.A.
